The Lost Years

I was lost but now I’m found.

The lost years of Daddy GeezLouies from 2002-2005 has been found. It covers a span of time from my second year in China to my return, my entrance into grad school and finally my meeting my then girlfriend, now Mommy GeezLouies. After re-reading all these old entries, I’ve noticed how superficial I can be.

Anyways, for more preaching, commentary, my thoughts and rants, go to the lost years archives @ geezlouies.net

Inflation, savings, and the Economics of Chuck E. Cheese

First Chuck E Cheese

I learned this lesson early in life and I’ll share it with you.  This is a sad story that reflects the state of our current economy, however, I should have seen it coming since this lesson was taught me at a very young age.

As a kid, Chuck E. Cheese’s was the place to go.  I’d probably go 2-3 times a year, usually for a soccer party or a birthday party.  That was an attractive and seductive place because of all the games and the possibility of making it big.  Winning that “big” prize.  Now that I look back at CEC, it can be equated to a big economics experiment.

The Goal: Earn as many tickets as possible using as few tokens as possible to trade in for the best prize.

Since this was my goal, I would look down on those kids playing the video games, air hockey, and all those other games that gave no tickets.  In fact I thought it was irrational to even play these games because all you get is zip, nadda, zero tickets after receiving a minute or two of “fun.”  Instead, I looked at games like skee-ball, whack-a-mole, basketball, and those games of skill that not only required great hand-eye coordination, but that rewarded your skill with tickets.  In the whole CEC economy, it wasn’t how many tokens you have at the end of the day, it was all about the tickets.

It was on one occasion that I came up with a brilliant plan.  Rather than purchase some weak prize with my 150 tickets, I decided to forgo the lower end prizes and save the tickets for my next encounter at CEC for something bigger and better.

The following year, I came back with the 150 tickets thinking I was big time.  I was going to make it big, buy myself a higher end prize.  It was then that I realized that saving might not be the best option.  Not only did they increase the number of tickets for the bigger prizes, they also increased the rewards so that a single game of skee-ball could result in you getting 150 tickets.  My savings of 150 tickets was equivalent to about 15 tickets of a year ago.  The best I could buy was probably some sticker or friendship bracelet.

The increase in ticket supply only amounted to robbing me of my savings by “rewarding” those kids who knew nothing about savings… those who only knew how to spend.  Well, the system goes on today, CEC continues to make more money, kids continue to play and have fun, and parents, unfortunately, will continue to enable this lifestyle.

This, my friends, is the lesson in economics I learned as a kid (or failed to learn).  Saving is genius… unless what you’re saving is being supplied by CEC.

Therefore, invest what you earn wisely.

Matthew 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Wii Remote Projects

Well, if you have some time and a Nintendo Wii, you can try these various projects. Johnny Lee is a genius and a really big nerd, but he’s able to modify the Wiimote to do some incredible things. Things like head tracking VR display, finger tracking and interactive whiteboards, using only a wii remote and some infrared LEDs. Pretty cool and probably the future of some video games. Check out his other projects at his site.

Star Trek: Deep Space 9

Thanks to our friend Ling, we have secured the entire seven seasons of DS9. Due to our limited time we are not watching all the episodes, but instead just some of my all-time favorites…

In no particular order (what we’ve seen so far):

The Emissary (The pilot and introduction of all the major characters and even guest-starring Patrick Stewart as Picard and Locutus)
Past Tense Parts I/II (Defiant sends Sisko, Dax, and Bashir back in time in a transporter accident. Social commentary as well as passionate acting from Sisko/Gabriel Bell)
“Trials and Tribble-ations” – Defiant goes back in time and meets TOS – Kirk, spock and company
The first six-seven episodes of Season 6 detailing the occupation of the dominion on DS9 ending with Sisko and the defiant going into the wormhole sacrificing themselves.
You are cordially invited – marriage of Worf and Dax.

Still wanting to watch:
Episode where Worf is captured by dominion and fights with honor (okay, nearly every episode with worf in it).
Far beyond the stars
Episode where Sisko starts getting visions… he truly is the emissary!
All the mirror universe episodes…
And the Series finale…

This series was put together very well. Characters grew in depth and likability through the seven years of the show. I liked the social aspects of it, the ethics of war, it addressed racism, love, marriage, family, parenting, death, and just about all aspects of life. Even in the series premiere, Sisko had a theophostic moment. Very powerful stuff as he was interacting with the prophets. He was brought back and experienced the most painful moment of his life. It was in fact the place he never left… the day that his wife was taken from him.

Anyways, this truly was a sci-fi soap opera…

Recipe: Kimchi Fried Rice

This is a quick and easy recipe for those with old kimchi and lots of leftover rice.  Learned this from watching my lovely wife who hung out with too many Koreans in a previous life.  I think it works better.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 4 cup of cooked rice

  • 1 cup of kimchi with liquid (pickled fermented vegetables)

  • Half can of SPAM

  • 1/4 bag of frozen veggies
  • 1/4 onion

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 1 egg

  • Sesame oil

  • Salt & pepper

Cooking Directions

  1. Cook rice as directed in a rice cooker or in a pot (leftover rice is the best).

  2. Chop kimchi into small pieces. Save kimchi liquid to add to rice

  3. Dice and mince green onions, onions, and garlic.

  4. Cut up spam into bite-size pieces
  5. Heat of wok/frying pan with sesame oil
  6. Saute kimchi with liquid
  7. Add rice and cook until soft

  8. Mix all ingredients well.

  9. Add salt and pepper to meet taste.

  10. Cook egg sunny side up (or scrambled).

  11. Put rice on a dish and place a fried egg sunny side up on top.

There’s probably a million other variations, so experiment and have fun!

Turducken

We had turducken together as a family for the first time yesterday.  It was quite the experience.  Quite a feast of flavors of turkey, duck and chicken… It apparently took the chefs eight hours to complete this labor intensive dish.  I’m not exactly sure the recipe, how they cooked it but I’ll probably never try to recreate this alone.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Well, if ever there was a movie of twists and turns, this would be it.  How many backstabbing, double-crossing, plot twisting, aargh-matey pirates can you stuff in one movie?  We didn’t keep count, but there were a lot, even a chinese pirate played by Chow Yun-Fat.

Keith Richards guest stars as Jack’s father.  I didn’t know who he was, but my lovely wife was able to point him out.  I know, this movie’s been out for a while.  Well, it finally came on our netflix.  So we watch the movies whenever netflix sends it to us.   After Eliana was born we haven’t gone to the theaters.  We splurge with netflix, but end up being about six months out of the loop.  I guess it’s a tradeoff but that’s okay with us.  It’s still fun to watch even if it isn’t the latest and the greatest.

Go Skins!

This year has been a year of ups and downs.  Painful losses and exuberant victories.  Well, we made it to the playoffs.  We’ll see what happens, one game at a time, right?  I’m no football expert, but there’s always that hope that they can make it to the superbowl.  Just look.  If they can defeat the seahawks, they’ll face the cowboys.  As always, that match up is a 50/50 chance of winning.  Then they’ll face the winner of the packer and the giants/bucs.  Again a 50/50 chance of winning.  They lost to the packers in the regular season due to a fumble by Santana Moss, but other than that they should have won. They dominated the Bucs and should have won, again due to turn overs.  And they handedly defeated the Giants in their most recent matchup.  So as the Redskins head the to playoffs, if they can continue with the reduced turnovers, they have a very, very good chance of making it to the superbowl.

Let’s hope the momentum continues.  Onward HO!
