jie-jie bed (the new toddler bed)
We finally put Eliana’s bed up yesterday. It was a hand-me down from Stephanie’s aunt. It was one of those things that we’ve been pushing off for a while.. not sure why exactly. For the past few months, Eliana has been sleeping on the floor, in our bed, and in her pack and play (our portable play-pen).
So I came home early from work, played a little with my girls and then set up her bed. When it was ready, grandma and I took her upstairs for her nap… we introduced “jie-jie bed” or “big sister bed” to her. She loved it. She climbed up onto the bed and tucked herself in. This is the same girl who hates taking naps and usually runs to “mommy bed” when placed into the pack and play. I guess the pack and play is too much like a prison and she didn’t want to be placed in jail to sleep. But she warmed up to “jie-jie bed” pretty fast.
So I tried something different today with the new bed. Instead of staying with her with until she fell asleep, I placed her down for her nap and walked out. As I walked out, I left the door slightly ajar just to see what she would do. She stayed in bed for about five minutes and then after not hearing any noises, she climbs down, pulls her blankets onto the floor and lies down on the floor. I guess old habits never die easy. She then sneaks over to the door and opens it… only to find me staring right back at her. She’s slightly startled and runs back to the pile of blankets on the floor.
I tell her she can sleep on jie-jie bed. And she nods okay. I nap with her for about 15 minutes and she’s out… I quietly sneak out of the room.
And that is our adventure with jie-jie bed.
(Disclaimer: jie-jie bed looks similar to the picture but not pink and no storage and also no strawberry ice cream theme… i just found a random photo off thefurniture.com courtesy of google.com)
What ever happened to our education?
I stumbled upon the eighth-grade final exam from 1895 from Salina, KS. USA.
It was taken from the original document on file at the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, KS and reprinted by the Salina Journal.
I wonder what ever happened to actual learning… now it seems like the education system cares more about our self-esteem than actual content of what we learn… but again, the stuff concerning character is something we should be learning at home…
For those learning guitar
Found this site off youtube: For Your Glory
Singaporean guy plays the song in one video, then gives instruction of the song, and even includes guitar tabs.
Virginia Tech news: Pritchard to go Co-Ed
From the latest Virginia Tech Magazine… I truly hoped this was an April Fool’s joke.
Pritchard Hall, currently the largest all-male residence hall on the East Coast, will transition to a co-ed residence hall in fall 2009. Pritchard will house a mix of 41 percent females and 59 percent males, a reflection of the gender balance of the student population on campus. The hall has housed 1,016 men during the 2008-09 academic year and has housed more than 40,000 men since it opened in 1967. The decision to open the building to female students was based on an increasing demand for co-ed housing and the changing gender balance of the Virginia Tech campus, with a higher number of females in the general population electing to attend college, increasing popularity of Virginia Tech among female students, and a higher number of women choosing to remain on campus after their first year.
I lived at Pritchard my freshman year of college. It was great. I met some of my closest college friends that year in that dorm… though I don’t think it would be great as a co-ed dorm. I enjoyed the male bonding that goes on there… or at least went on there. It’s different when you add girls to the mix :) Anyways, Pritchard was the dirtiest of the dorms, nasty to say the least. I hope they clean it up some before allowing the girls to move in.
The King of Beers
MEMORIES
On our last trip to the motherland back in 2005, Stef (my then fiancee) and I led a group of Americans on a “cultural exchange” trip in Sichuan province. It was extremely exciting and hard work. We tended to most of the logistical stuff, like what to eat, where to go, who to meet, etc… But of course we had to worry about “safety” and “tastes” when it came to where to go eat. So we played it pretty safe for most of the trip by staying with big restaurants and well known places and ordered pretty safe stuff so that everyone wouldn’t be grossed out. We made sure things were clean and didn’t expose the group to any unnecessary risks.
SHAOKAO
Us on the other hand, after tucking everyone into bed, snuck out of the hotel and wandered the streets of Chengdu. We found a “hole in the wall” on the side of the street and had the most delicious shao kao.
XUEHUA (SNOW)
To top it off, we had ourselves two bottles of XueHua (literally snow flower or snow flake) Beer. And those were 620ml bottles. Anyways that was probably the most memorable meal we had in china during that trip. The two of us, sitting on the side of the street, chewing chunks of meat off a stick and drinking beer. The smells of Sichuan spices and the night time summer air was so good.
Even to this day, I still remember fondly of that night drinking xuehua beer. It was the best tasting beer I had ever tasted… perhaps it was the food I was eating it with or the company I had, but my memory has kept me thinking of that beer. I never had xuehua until I went to Sichuan. Beijing had an assortment of beers, but the people’s brand was Yanjing Beer. My first exposure to Xuehua was on the streets of Chengdu.
PRESENT UPDATE
I did a search on Google to see if there were any imports in the U.S. Everyone talks about Tsingtao, but a large majority of people have not even heard of Xuehua. But it happens to be very popular in Sichuan province and the people there claim it to be their provincial drink…
Apparently SABMiller did a joint venture with Xuehua a few years back and it is being marketed as “Snow” Beer. It has also become the world’s biggest selling beer in terms of volume with over 61 million hectoliters.
My fondest beer has overtaken Bud Light as the KING OF BEERS.
If you ever get a chance to visit China, ask for Xuehua… or if you know of any distributors in the U.S., please, PLEASE, let me know :)
La Chance?
This video is entitled la chance… I’m not sure how many of them are real but some are insanely improbable events… enjoy!
Accelerated reading program
I woke up today to a nice surprise. My two year-old daughter started reading basic books. She listened to the alphabet song for a while, but didn’t show such accelerated reading skills until today. I’ve been searching on-line recently on how to increase reading comprehension for two year-olds. I found a bunch of sites, but each site required pretty intense training that I didn’t think fit her.
Anyways, with this new revelation, I’ve decided to enroll her with a private tutor for developing toddlers in accelerated reading and reading comprehension. We’re not sure what to do with this special gift, but intend to use it all for the glory of God.

Where the () is Matt?
Okay, so this is probably what I should have done when I went traveling around the world… According to Youtube this took 14 months to make in 42 countries and thousands of people.
