Well, my brother is getting married in a few days. So we have getting ready for that… meaning we are cleaning our house. Memorial Day Weekend is going to be pretty intense. Hopefully we’ll get some of those pics up next week.

Here’s some wisdom from Jesus:

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. — Luke 15:4-6

Friends bought a moon bounce for their kid’s birthday party. Now, we go over to play.

This was the second official gathering of the fellowship, although one of our members couldn’t make it. The first one took place over three months ago when the guys and I decided to visit a local establishment selling cheap buffalo wings. We spent way too much on drinks… as a result, my wife wanted in on the action this time and we decided to do Korean BBQ.

We ended up buying a ton of sliced beef (bulgogi) and short ribs (kalbi). MommyG marinated it in her special sauce earlier that day and we fired up our portable gas grill. Ooh. So good. And so much food and left overs. Contentment. And in keeping with the tradition, we also had buffalo wings.

We just had a wild day today. Lots of friends and family came out… I hope everyone had a good time. We certainly did :) and we didn’t have any alcohol either :P

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday as I attended a high school graduation with the commencement speaker. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia spoke to the WT Woodson 2009 graduating class in a rebuttal-like fashion. Very funny man with lots of historical examples (precedents)…

First to put it in context, the student speaker speech was filled with cliches and platitudes (kids these days)… so Scalia, as always, dissented from the normal feel-good speech. He started off saying that he will dissect some of the more commonly used platitudes and instead give his take on it.

Platitude #1 We have overcome unprecedented challenges – this comes from a lack of knowing your history. Scalia went on to talk about how Troy was surrounded by the Greeks and then us facing the possibility of nuclear war, and then terrorism, etc. as examples of when people faced annihiliation and other challenges. His conclusion was that there is nothing new under the sun or learn your history.

Platitude #2 Follow the north star (follow your dreams). – In a direct response to the student speaker, Scalia encouraged people to be zealous, but zealous for the right reasons. He warned people that sometimes following your dreams may not be the best option… especially if your dreams are not based on what is right. He pointed out the many follies of men who were so blinded by their dreams that they did evil instead of good. He mentioned people like Hitler and Lenin who stuck to their convictions, their north star, but ended up in the wrong. So instead he concluded: “seek wisdom, seek good, and then be the captain of your boat” or “it’s better to stay still than to work your butt off in the wrong direction.”

Platitude #3 America is the greatest country in the world.. Off course he agreed with that statement, but not in the way most people do. Some say we are the greatest because we are the free-est, but freedom is not merely the exercise of liberty. He went on to say that it is within the context of laws that our freedoms were created and it is with responsibility of the citizens that our freedom is upheld. He gave an example of spitting gum in the street. If no one did it, then no law would have to be made… but if everyone spat gum in the street, them there will be need for some sort of regulation. He was not talking about gum spitting. He then went to the founding fathers and quoted from Federalist Paper #51:

“The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”

Anyways, I think he was trying to say America is greatest when her citizens are most responsible… my take: we are greatest (and free-est) when we exercise our responsbility. Or our greatness isn’t how much liberty we can exercise, but how much responsibility we take.

And there was another one, but I can’t remember right now. But overall, I liked the way he pointed out folly and turned the audience back to wisdom.

My final take: Remember history or you’ll repeat it, you’re not as smart as you think you are, seek guidance from your elders, you’re part of a greater community so do your part…

Someone mentioned having a moon bounce at their wedding… we were just at a b-day party… lots of fun and highly recommended. it’s also a great aerobic exercise.

News from Caringbridge

At 10:45am, Pat left her earthly body and went to be with her heavenly Savior. She was surrounded by her husband, Gordon, sister, Lana, and children Kendra & Barrett. We rejoice that she passed peacefully and is now at rest with Jesus.

A memorial service is tenatively scheduled for next Thursday evening at 7pm at Immanuel Bible Church (there will not be a funeral or viewing). We will update with more details when things are finalized.

Last week was baby Geezlouie’s first birthday.  Fun as usual.  Party within a party.  Lots of family, lots of excitement and the usual unexpected turns of events.  Yes, I’m being particularly vague just to protect the innocent… 

This past weekend was a quick visit to another 1 year birthday party.  1 year olds just have no clue what’s going on.  Near the end of the party was when things go really exciting.  Eliana threw up for the first time.  This wasn’t your usual spit up milk.  It was the whole split pea soup throw up from the exorcist….  it didn’t just happen once, but twice… Eliana was fine, but I was definitely traumatized.  She continued playing and kissing people like nothing happened.  Scary, but I guess she felt better… :)  We ended up borrowing the other birthday girl’s clothes. 

Lastly, I’m starting to realize that I’ve been growing.  Not the growing taller part… but the growing wider part.  My pants are getting tighter and harder to button up… but it wasn’t till yesterday that I realized that the same pants I wore three to four years ago are no longer fitting comfortably.  The button popped off my pants.  Luckily I wore a sweater to cover up the faux-pas, but still…

As of today, I’m going on a strict regiment… gonna run miles, eat healthier, gonna be healthy :)  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
